Speaking at the Buddhist conference and Kathin Chibar Dan festival at International Buddhist Monastery at Merul Badda on Saturday, Sheikh Hasina said members of all communities were free to observe their religion in this country.
"In 1971, people from all religions gave their lives for our liberation," Hasina said.
She said secularism had been incorporated in the constitution to abolish all communalism and religious disparity.
"But Ziaur Rahman destroyed that constitution to instigate fundamentalism and give shelter to the anti-liberation elements," she added.
The prime minister said the 15th amendment had restored the constitution to its earlier ideology.
Hasina mentioned that two bighas of land had been allocated to the monastery and hoped that a beautiful new monastery would be built there.
Earlier, she unveiled the cornerstone for the new monastery.
Supreme patriarch of the monastery Dhammasen Mahathero chaired the event. Industries minister Dilip Barua, state minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Dipankar Talukder and Chinese ambassador Zhang Xianye also spoke at the event.
