4 deer poachers sent to jail

Forest officials have arrested four deer poachers from the Sundarbans in Sharankhola upazila of Bagerhat district.

They also seized venison, two deer skin, 500 traps, sharp weapons and three trawlers from the spot.


Mihir Kumar Do, divisional forest officer of the Sundarbans east zone, told bdnews24.com that a plainclothes team of Kokilmoni patrolling camp of the forest department arrested the four on Friday in special drives conducted in the shoal and canal areas outside of Sharankhola range.


They were identified as Poncha Gazi, 25, of Baradal of Ashashuni upazila in Satkhira district, Pradyut Sarker, 35, and Dipak Gain, 30, of Kaminibasini of Dakop upazila, and Bakhtiar Gazi, 30, of Kawkhali cluster village of Paikgacha upazila in Khulna district.


Two cases were filed with the Sharankhola Police Station in this connection.


The court ordered to send them in jail when they were produced before it on Saturday.


Earlier on Wednesday, the forest officials arrested two deer poachers in the mangrove forest.


"Security measures have been beefed up in the forest ahead of Ras Mela from Nov 8 to 10. The Eid holidays of all the staff and employees of the forest department have been cancelled," Mihir added.
